Video DownloadHelper not working? Causes and fixes

Video DownloadHelper is a handy extension, but it can stop catching videos — especially on streaming sites. Here are the usual causes, a free fix, and an easier option if you don't want the command line.

Quick answer. If the site uses DRM (Netflix, Disney+, Prime, Hulu), no tool can download it. Otherwise, the most reliable fix is to give the page link to a desktop downloader built on yt-dlp — free in the Terminal, or one click in SVD.

1. Check the common causes

The video is DRM-protected

Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Hulu and similar services encrypt video with DRM. Video DownloadHelper, yt-dlp and SVD all refuse these. There is no fix — this is by design.

It's a streaming format (HLS / m3u8 or DASH)

Many sites don't serve one video file. They send a playlist (.m3u8) that points to hundreds of short pieces, often with video and audio separate. An extension may show many tiny entries, only the audio, or nothing at all. The fix is a tool that reads the master playlist and merges everything into one MP4. See the m3u8 / HLS guide.

YouTube in Chrome

Chrome Web Store policy doesn't allow extensions that download YouTube videos, so Chrome extensions generally can't save YouTube. Desktop tools aren't bound by that policy.

The site needs you to be logged in

Member-only or paid videos need your session. Make sure you're signed in to the site in the same browser. Desktop tools can reuse your browser's sign-in (for example, yt-dlp's --cookies-from-browser).

The video hasn't started, or it's a live stream

Extensions usually detect media only after playback starts — press play and reload if needed. Live streams are a special case: saving a broadcast as it happens needs a recorder, not a one-shot download. See the live recording guide.

Free-version limits

According to its website, Video DownloadHelper's premium license adds unlimited downloads and maximum quality. If downloads stop or quality is capped, the free version may be the reason.

2. Free fix: yt-dlp

yt-dlp is a free, open-source downloader that supports 1,800+ sites. Install it, then run it with the page link (not the media link):

yt-dlp "https://example.com/watch/123"

For a site that needs your login:

yt-dlp --cookies-from-browser chrome "https://example.com/watch/123"

If you only have an .m3u8 address, pass that instead. yt-dlp needs ffmpeg installed to merge video and audio.

3. Easier fix: the same engine with one click

If you'd rather not use the Terminal, SVD bundles yt-dlp and ffmpeg in a native Mac and Windows app. Paste the page link — or click the SVD extension on the page — pick the quality, and save. It also records live streams and can start recording automatically when a channel goes live. See SVD vs Video DownloadHelper.

Still not downloading?

Paste the page link into SVD. macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows, 7-day free trial, no account.

A note on legitimacy

SVD is built for legitimate, personal use: saving videos you have the right to keep — your own uploads, Creative Commons and public-domain works, licensed or permitted content, and offline backups of material you can already access. SVD does not break DRM and will not download from Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, or Hulu. It only saves non-DRM streams your browser can already play. Respect each site's Terms of Service and your local copyright law.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Video DownloadHelper not detecting the video?

Most often the video is a streaming format (HLS/m3u8 or DASH) split into many small pieces, the site needs you to be logged in, or the page has not started playing yet. Start playback, reload the page, and check you are signed in. If the extension still sees nothing, try a desktop tool such as yt-dlp or SVD with the page link.

Why can't I download YouTube videos with Video DownloadHelper in Chrome?

Chrome Web Store policy does not allow extensions that download YouTube videos, so Chrome extensions generally cannot save YouTube. A desktop app such as yt-dlp or SVD is not bound by that policy.

Why does my downloaded video have no sound or won't play?

Many sites send video and audio as separate streams. If only one of them was saved, or the pieces were not merged, the file can be silent or unplayable. A downloader that merges streams with ffmpeg, such as yt-dlp or SVD, avoids this.

Can any tool download Netflix or Disney+?

No. DRM-protected services such as Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and Hulu cannot be downloaded by Video DownloadHelper, yt-dlp or SVD.
